INTRODUCTION TO SENIOR LEADERSHIP AT CCC
- The core role of every senior leader and manager at Cranford Community College is unambiguously and unwaveringly about promoting the highest and most consistent standards and expectations of curriculum, teaching, learning, conduct, safety, relationships, progress and achievement.
- The role requires a limitless and selfless belief in what others who are well motivated, well trained and highly skilled can achieve on their own as well as when they are properly encouraged, supported, respected as individuals, included, liked, admired, given responsibility, shown compassion, guided, challenged, held to account, trusted and developed.
- Leadership is fundamentally about developing other people (students, colleagues, parents, our community, our partners and anyone that plays any part in the success of the academy and our community).
- The only glory that is valued by true leaders is reflected.
- It has been written that ‘Leadership is about doing the right thing’ and ‘Management is about doing things right’.
- ‘Doing the right thing’ strategically requires ‘Cranford Senior Leaders’ to develop an ever-deepening grasp and understanding of the principles, values and vision of Cranford Community College through team learning, discussion, reflection and by appropriate co-consultation when unsure.
- The principles and values of the college are to be determined by the Chief Executive in so far as they are not determined by the Academy Trust.
- SLT and others have a responsibility to influence upwards, sideways and downwards to maintain, develop and promote the principles and values and to actively contribute to, shape and re-shape the dynamic vision.
- To ‘Do the right thing’ operationally, ‘Cranford Senior Leaders’ must adopt an unbreakable habit of reflecting on the core principles and values of the organisation in their daily execution of the role, in policy development, during all decision making, prior to guiding colleagues, when answering questions, when responding to emails, etc.
- Senior ‘Leaders’ must work incredibly hard, but not seek to draw attention to that fact or seek recognition for it, but instead they must notice how hard others work.
- Great senior leaders focus on the present and the future(s) and what can be made better, learning from but never dwelling or allowing others to dwell on the past and on things that can no longer be changed.
- They must manage their energy better than their time, they must remain optimistic, resilient, wise, calm, confident, firm and parental in their stance.
- ‘Doing things right’ requires ‘Cranford Senior Managers’ to have high standards and high expectations of themselves and others, to respect attention to detail, to be organised, to breathe excellence, to refer and adhere to policies, systems and procedures, to forward plan and to apply the same standards and principles even in crisis and/or when under pressure.
- Being a senior leader at Cranford requires unbending loyalty, faith and trust in the organisation’s unique and long-term approach and for the academy’s capacity grow without any horizon through adherence to its values, through resilience, through seeing and taking opportunities and calculated risks, and through innovation, team working, good judgment and foresight, through being forward looking and entrepreneurial and not following the crowd.
- The role of a senior leader at Cranford requires a deep commitment to a number of key themes which reflect and describe the core identity of this particular, values driven, organisation.
- These themes are to some extent encapsulated by Cranford’s traditional mottos ‘Excellence in All Areas’ and ‘Transforming a Community’.
- They are best exemplified through a permanent focus on high expectations, strong relationships, principled centred leadership, total quality management, systems, and policies through the effective and strategic (aims, policies, management, monitoring & evaluation) leadership of the academy so that the academy remains outstanding regardless of the changes to the environment (for example, government policy, nspection frameworks, finance pressures, Covid, etc.).
- The post is very demanding in a variety of ways and whilst it may attract a lower teaching contact ratio (which changes as needed and at least annually depending on priorities) there are numerous other planned and unpredictable demands and deadlines which mean that effective time and energy management, emotional intelligence and resilience are essential.
- Post holders provide leadership and ideas within an established team to continue the strategic development of an outstanding academy committed to remaining among the best both nationally and internationally.
- Post holders play a key role in promoting and implementing the whole school priorities and helping others to understand the unlimited nature of these and how they are each central to them.
- Outstanding personal performance over time is an essential pre-requisite for this post and the quality of one’s own work, including one’s own teaching, remains a top priority for every member of the team.
- The various roles spread within the team are formally reviewed periodically (individually and as a team) but may also vary as needs and circumstances change, even during the year.
- This makes it more possible to adjust the responsibilities of team members to reflect personal strengths and better address the academy’s priorities.
- SLT are team members who not only need to be able to work independently but must be able to work within and lead teams, contributing and learning, and will also need to work in pairs, trios, quartets, quitets, etc within and beyond the team.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP PROTOCOL 2023-24 (Annual Re-Commitment)
STRATEGIC AND TACTICAL WORKING
- As a team, we need to be both strategic and tactical.
- We are working as part of the team even when working individually.
- Strategy without tactics is said to be the slowest route to success.
- Tactics without strategy is often just the ‘noise’ or activity that precedes failure.
- Tactics and strategy are not at odds with one another, they’re part of a pairing.
- Those charged with strategy also need to think tactically.
- Those charge with tactics, need to think strategically.
- Tactics must be true to the overarching strategy.
- Additionally, senior leaders all need to be doers, leaders, supporters, motivators, communicators, persuaders, empowerers, delegators, directors, etc.
- Strategy defines our long-term goals and how we’re planning to achieve them (in keeping with our vision, values and principles).
- Our strategy broadly identifies or spotlights the path we need toward achieving our mission and goals.
- Strategy is likely to be most successfully achieved when informed and enhanced by intelligence, research and/or consultation.
- Tactics are much more concrete and are often oriented toward achieving the smaller steps and within shorter time frames along the way.
- Tactics draw on best practices, research, knowledge, specific plans, resources, etc.
- Tactics may need to be flexible enough to respond the changes in the environment to avoid compromising the strategic goals.
- Good tactics are always determined by the strategy, principles, policies and values. They have clear purposes which aid the strategy and finite timelines during which milestones will be achieved and their impacts evaluated.
- Some tactics may be unacceptable to the academy in order to maintain its authenticity, reputation, values and integrity.
- This document is focussed on the strategic and tactical responsibilities of the Leadership Team and some other ‘Key Leadership and Management Personnel’.
- Much in this document will ultimately extend to post holders, staff, students, parents and other stakeholders but that mapping is beyond the purpose of this document.
- There is a separate exercise which covers the 8 key attributes of an effective team.
- There is a separate stakeholders exercise which covers wider engagement in the academy’s vision, values, direction, strategies and tactics (including the resulting policies and procedures).
