Term Dates & Times of the Academy Day 2020 - 2024 (Covid Updated)

Following consultation in 2019/20, the Academy Trust Board has UNANIMOUSLY AGREED the following term dates up to and including the academic year 2023/2024. The next 5 year consultation is scheduled for autumn 2022.

The consultation included the proposal to increase the number of teacher development days from 5 to 10 with the intention of building to a 5 day block adjacent to October half-term, effectively introducing a two week autumn half-term for students. This has been UNANIMOUSLY AGREED by the trust board but is being phased in more slowly in response to the unexpected coronavirus lockdown in spring / summer 2020.

The full 10 teacher development days have been introduced for 2021-22 but using these to craete a two week October half-term for students has been delayed until 2022-2023.

The academy is largely satisfied with its coronavirus safety strategy and the core focus has now moved back to the quality of curriculum, teaching and learning.

In 2020-2021, the additional training time focussed on adapting pedagogy to ensure outstanding impact for all in the context of coronavirus, including beamed learning, teaching and learning with masks, meeting individual needs at a distance, blended learning, remote support / well-being, extra-curricular, virtual/remote learning, the academy's whole school catch-up strategy and Year 11 / Year 13 examination readiness.

Travelling to and from the academy

Students, and those staff who can, are expected to walk or cycle to the academy rather than take public transport.

The walk to school, whilst having many health and other benefits, may be a longer walk than many are accustomed to so it may be advisable to make a practice before your start date and get an accurate idea of how long it will actually take.

We expect students to adopt their own risk assessed approach so they should, for example, consider donning a face mask if they meet up with a group of friends on the way to or from school and won’t be 2 meters apart at all times.

Early arrival to school is more important than ever as the academy will seal its inner site to all by closing the entry gates and routes at 9.30 a.m. promptly each day to maintain the academy’s ‘super bubble’.

This means staff and students leaving early enough every day to still arrive on time even if there are transport problems.

The academy gates will open at 8 a.m. each day and all students must be on site before 9.20 a.m. at the latest and the gates will close again at 3.45 p.m. to allow daily deep cleaning before the school welcomes its community users.

In order to manage the new entry checks and routines, year groups will have a fixed entry and exit route as set out below and the academy will be deploying more staff to duties before school, at breaks and after school to ensure safe practices, train students in situ and implement academy safety policies:

Year 7 and 8

Enter via the main pedestrian entrance gate at the north end of the academy site between 8 a.m. and 9.20 a.m. Students must stay on the pathway. Parents must not stop cars near any of the entrances or at the bus stop. The academy car park is for staff cars only. The academy will ask the council and police to introduce enforcement measures should parents behave irresponsibly.

Mandatory temperature scanning, facemask checks, uniform checks, screening and hand washing will be carried out at the new external sink trough (see video) located at the north end of the concourse.

Year 9

Enter via the middle Memorial Garden gate by the bus stop on the high street at the front of the academy site between 8 a.m. and 9.20 a.m. Students must stay on the pathway. Parents must not stop cars near any of the entrances or at the bus stop. The academy car park is for staff cars only. The academy will ask the council and police to introduce enforcement measures should parents behave irresponsibly.

Mandatory temperature scanning, facemask checks, uniform checks, screening and hand sanitising will be carried out at the Memorial Garden entrance to the Dining Hall. Hand sanitising is necessary until the new external sink trough (see video) is installed in the Memorial Garden

Year 10 and 11

Enter via the south pedestrian gate by the deliveries entrance on the high street at the south end of the academy site between 8 a.m. and 9.20 a.m. Students must stay on the pathway. Parents must not stop cars near any of the entrances or at the bus stop. The academy car park is for staff cars only. The academy will ask the council and police to introduce enforcement measures should parents behave irresponsibly.

Mandatory temperature scanning, facemask checks, uniform checks, screening and hand washing will be carried out at the new external sink trough (see video) located by the south end of the Memorial Garden

Year 12 and 13

Enter via the pedestrian gate from the footbridge above the parkway at the south end of the academy site between 8 a.m. and 9.20 a.m. Parents must not stop cars on or near the Parkway. The academy will ask the council and police to introduce enforcement measures should parents behave irresponsibly.

Mandatory temperature scanning, facemask checks, uniform checks, screening and hand washing will be carried out at the new external sink trough (see video) located by huts S7 / S8

Students arriving early can congregate outside on the site but should aim to spread out as far as possible and avoid any groups of more than 6 people.

Whilst facemasks are not mandatory outdoors, students and staff are encouraged to wear them as often as possible and should wear them whenever the risk is higher (e.g. when playing in close proximity with other)

Wearing a facemask offers personal protection but is also an act of care and compassion to safeguard others, particular those adults and young people who could be more vulnerable if they were to contract the virus.

In severe, inclement weather, Cranford SuperDome and other large indoor spaces may be opened to allow more sheltered but spacious and airy accommodation.

There is some weather protection along the concourse and more will be installed around the site along with increased external and outdoor furniture throughout the autumn 2020 term in readiness for next summer particularly.

There are now three main canteens (Dining Hall, Concert Hall and the brand new ‘Cranford Suite’, which has been built to allow us to space out students across the catering venue). These will open at Break 1 and Break 2 only. The academy will also be taking the management of the catering provision under its umbrella for at least the next year and is seeking to invest in making significant improvements in the infrastructure and offer before it would consider contracting out again.

Lunches will be served as follows and this will be the only opportunity to buy food from the canteen (other than before school at the Cube):

Before school, between 9.20 a.m. and 9.30 a.m., students will be required to move to their tutor base in batches, via tannoy announcement. Registration will take place at 9.30 a.m. promptly. Exit at the end of the day will also be staggered
